Plot

It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star, an armoured space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.

Princess Leia, a senator with the Rebel Alliance, sent the plans on a R2-D2 robot, and sent him off just before she got captured by the Empire guards. The robot escapes and lands on Tatooine, near where a young engineer named Ben lives. He wants to become a fighter pilot, but the academy is miles away, and the family cannot afford the costs. Even more still, Ben's father wants him to work on the farm until they get enough money to get out of the farming business. When the family comes across the junk wholesaler, they find the same R2-D2 model for sale. After buying it, a message appears from Princess Leia, saying "Help me, Artemis Fowl, you're our only hope."

Ben investigates with a "hermit" named Arthur McWilliams, who came to the planet a few years ago. He sees this and reveals that he is Artemis Fowl, a name he "hadn't heard for a long, long, time." After revealing this, the full message is played, and Princess Leia's father ends up being a good friend of Artemis, and says that she will be kidnapped by the Empire, and needs help to save her and the planet she lives on, Alderaan. Artemis asks Ben to come with him and learn the ways of the Force, but he initially declines. However, he returns home to find his home ransacked and his parents dead, and decides to come with Ben. The two go to Mos Eisley, where they hire Han Solo and Chewbacca to travel to Alderaan for an exuberant fee.

Meanwhile, Leia is interrogated by the Empire, and when she still doesn't relent, the General threats the destruction of Alderaan if Leia didn't reveal that she sent the plans of the Death Star to the Rebels. Despite doing what the General asked her to do, the planet is blown up anyways. Han, Chewbacca, Artemis and Ben are travelling when this occurs, and Artemis "feels a great disturbance in the force." They arrive at the coordinates for Alderaan but find a bunch of debris. With the Death Star nearby, the ship they are riding on gets trapped in the tractor beam of the Death Star. The group goes to disable the tractor beam, with Han and Chewbacca breaking the security door, Artemis disabling the power supply, and Ben freeing Leia. The tractor beam is disabled, but Artemis gets into a lightsaber fight with the General, and Artemis is killed. The Falcon escapes, but has a homing device on it, allowing the Empire to figure out where the Rebel base is - Yavin.

The Rebels analyze the Death Star plans, and find a small exhaust port that, when exploited, will destroy the entire base. The port, however, is only three meters wide and twists around for added defense. Ben is enlisted with the Air Force, and leads through an offensive on the Death Star. Although heavily outnumbered, the Rebel forces are more skilled. Despite this, Ben finds himself as one of the three remaining Rebels able to attack the exhaust port. The first one gets shot down, the second gets engine trouble, and Ben nearly gets shot down but is saved by Han, who left earlier to collect payment for his delivery work. Ben shoots the missile using the force and breaks down the exhaust port, causing a chain reaction that blows up the Death Star. Han, Chewbacca, and Ben are awarded medals for their valour.
