Plot

The movie starts off with two cruisers being driven by "James" and Obi-Wan Kenobi, en route to Tatooine. Suddenly, some separtist ships attack the defenseless cruisers, with James' ship exploding and Kenobis' being damaged. Kenobi then crash lands near Naboo's town hall, where Artemis Fowl and his master, simply known as Master Ben, are training about The Force, which can "control everything if you let it." Just as Kenobi explains how he got there and what he thinks might happen, a few droids attack the group, which are easily defeated by Artemis. The three decide to travel to Tatooine but cannot afford the tickets, even for a one-way trip, and decide to go to the Gungan King for help. After meeting and destroying a decoy of the Gungan King, the three pick up the Gungan King, who needed to travel to Tatooine as a diplomat for Naboo, and they go to the airport, where Fowl, Ben and Kenobi board the ship, but not the Gungan King, who is gunned down by an unknown assassin, and secretly boards the ship, along with someone else, right before it leaves.

Fowl, Ben and Kenobi realized on their trip that the engine is in bad shape, so a few droids are sent to repair the ship, and they barely make it to Tatooine. They land right outside Mos Eisley, the largest city by population, and make a home with Qui-Gon Jinn, a merchant, and Anakin Skywalker, a professional podracer, despite only being 8 years old. Jinn finds out that there are signals coming from East of their hut, and the only way to get there was to pass Watto's shop, who builds podracers for a living, and cross the "Devil's Desert," which is an uninhabitable place. Watto refuses to let them through the easterly exit unless Anakin won the next race, which Anakin hadn't even finished before. Anakin, however, wins the race, but Watto turns on the group and starts attacking them, until he is defeated by Artemis. Artemis and Kenobi go to the east while the rest stay behind, with Ben hoping to raise funds to come back to Naboo. Fowl and Kenobi find the assassin that killed the Gungan King, and Artemis easily apprehends him.

Artemis then spots a jungle in the middle of the desert. It is then identified that it is the Oasis Jungle, and a native tells Kenobi that there has been some "strange noises" coming from the east which turns out to be a communicator, possibly to communicate to other planets. Kenobi hacks into the communicator and sends a message to a hut, and soon enough, Anakin finds out and jumps on a (stolen) plane and travels to the Oasis Jungle. Artemis heads into the base but finds the door blocked with a laser door. Kenobi disables the power generator and Artemis heads into the base, where Darth Maul, and his master, are found and the master tells Maul that he is ready to fight. Maul comes out of the backroom and finds Fowl instantly. The two start fighting and Fowl uses The Force to put Maul back into the room briefly. He finds another hangar, where he sees lots of ships leaving and attacking the area. Maul comes back from the room, and fights with Artemis, and after a long battle, Artemis sends Maul down the vertical tunnel. Just then, Anakin comes in, and fires into the base. He then drops a bomb into the vertical tunnel, where it explodes, and Artemis and Anakin rides back into the hut. Ben tells Artemis that he only funded enough money for one person. Artemis says that he can go back to Naboo. Ben says that Artemis can communicate with him with technology. Ben's ship rides back and the movie ends.

Reception

In North America the film grossed over $50 million dollars and $100 worldwide. Belsø said that a sequel was "mandatory" after the film's smash earnings. Strangely enough, though, it never went higher than #3 in the box office and did not go above $10 million in a week.

The critical reception, though, was very strong. Many critics praised the scenery, the musical score, and McArthur's performance. McArthur himself was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Film, and the film was nominated for two Oscars, Best Original Score (written by Ben Holmstrom) and Best Visual Effects. Sadly, they did not win any of the awards. It remained the only film in the Artemis Fowl series to be nominated for an Oscar, until The Atlantis Complex in Yr49 was nominated for three Oscars.

On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a "fresh" rating with a 78% average from the critics.
