Season Synopsis
During the offseason, the team didn't add many players onto their roster, though they did add World Cup goalkeeper James Pantemis, and defender Ronald Matarrita. The Eagles got to a positive start, going undefeated in their first seven games of the regular season, with 5 wins in the 7 games. This extended their undefeated streak to 20 games from the previous season, easily passing their record of 14 games undefeated from the previous season. In the Champions League, they drew Los Angeles FC in a back and forth match, but then lost the second leg 3-0, knocking them out in the Quarterfinals. The Eagles then lost 5-1 to expansion team St. Louis, ending their undefeated streak. However, the Eagles started anew, getting 7 wins in their next 8 games.
On May 2, forward Andre Shinyashiki was investigated in a police report in connection with a rape that was reported in early March. About an hour after the news reports were made, Shinyashiki was released from his contract, though his agents filed an appeal a few days later, requesting payment for terminating his contract, while the Eagles contested that they were releasing him for cause from his contract.
Their undefeated streak continued with a draw against Vancouver and a win against Toronto, but a loss against DC United ended their undefeated streak at 10 games. A draw against New England also put an end to their home game winning streak to start the season at 10 games as well. Still, the Eagles were six points clear of Nashville in the Supporters' Shield standings. After another draw against Charlotte, Fourside won against the Red Bulls and Nashville, putting them 8 points ahead of New England in the Supporters' Shield heading into the Leagues Cup. The Eagles won their group in the Leagues Cup and won against Quertaro, New England (on penalties) and Philadelphia to advance to the Semi-Finals, where Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF defeated the Eagles in a 4-1 blowout. The Eagles still won third place in the tournament to qualify for the 2024 Champions Cup.
After wins against New York City and Atlanta, the Eagles were well clear of any opposition for the Supporters' Shield. However, a small skid occurred afterwards, with a loss to Orlando and ties to Columbus and Philadelphia. They got back to their winning ways in Montreal, with a goal from Malcolm Johnston (brother to former Montreal player Alistair) giving them the win in the closing minutes. A 3-0 victory over Charlotte clinched the Supporters' Shield for Fourside, their first shield since 2016. Wins against Toronto, Miami, and Atlanta at the end of the season brought the Eagles to 74 points, breaking the record for the most points in a single season in MLS history.
In the MLS Cup Playoffs, the Eagles defeated the Red Bulls in two games of the best-of-three series. In the Conference Semi-Final against Philadelphia, Ronald Matarrita scored a late winner to advance the Eagles into the next round. In the Conference Final against Columbus, Fourside came back from a 2-0 deficit after 75 minutes of play, from goals by Cavallini and Pozuelo. In extra time, Brian Jansen scored a free-kick winner from 30 yards out, sealing the win in dramatic fashion. At the MLS Cup Final, Fourside benefitted from a penalty goal by Ebobisse and by a goal from Dominique Badji with a long assist from Jansen, as the Eagles secured the win 2-1 and completed their first MLS double.
