2018 Fourside Eagles FC season
The 2018 Fourside Eagles FC season is the ninth in the Fourside Eagles FC's history. It is the third season under the management of Robin Fraser, coming off a successful MLS Cup campaign the previous season.
Season Synopsis
The biggest story in the pre-season was the departure of club icon Miguel Senna to Benfica, turning in a record incoming transfer fee for the MLS of $45 million US Dollars (Approximately 37 million Euros). They used some of that money by bringing in Derlis Gonzalez for $15 million, also setting the record for the biggest outgoing transfer fee in the process. (This record was later tied by Atlanta's signing of Ezequiel Barco.) The Eagles also traded for David Accam in return for about $1.2 million dollars in Transfer Allocation Money, a move that Richard Gerhart called a "wonderful surprise," considering that they tried to trade for the player unsuccessfully in the past. However, the team was also dogged by the departure of Jordan Harvey to Los Angeles FC via free agency, leaving a hole in the teams' leadership as well as their defense.
The season started off with a low, as the Eagles were eliminated by Tigres UANL in the Round of 16 in the Champions League, despite a goal from Gonzalez on his debut. The first few games of the regular season started off rough as well, as the team only won one game within their first six games of the season. The team eventually rebounded, despite it clearly showing that the team was not being able to find a suitable replacement for Miguel Senna. Still, the Eagles were competing for a playoff spot, and had memorable wins in August, winning four straight matches. They also won their sixth straight Micronesian Championship, defeating the Dawson Lions in the final.
The Eagles had a slow end to the regular season, however. A lack of moves from the front office, instead preferring to stay put, resulted in harsh criticism from the press. Nonetheless, the Eagles still qualified for the playoffs in the fourth seed, even after dropping their last two games of the season against both New York teams. They faced DC United in the Knockout round, although they lost the match 3-1, making it the first time they were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round out of the seven straight times they made the playoffs.
