The FIFA Invitational Tournament was a tournament held in Yr53 containing international teams from around the world. Although held as an informal friendly event, it was founded to protest the handing of the Yr64 World Cup to Chile, and the surrounding bribery allegations of the successful host bid. Entries were later open to teams from South America and Asia, in a bid to lure the bigger teams to the protest. Eventually, 24 teams entered the tournament.
Pre-Tournament
Most of the entries were given to teams that had previous football history and success. Initially the entries were sent to teams in Europe, Asia, and Africa, since teams from the Americas were initially not interested in breaking away from FIFA. However, the need for a breakaway organization faded as the qualifiers for the World Cup approached, so entries opened up for all teams of all organizations.
Europe, being the most competitive continent, initially sent out invitations to 12 teams. Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, England, and Czech Republic immediately accepted. Belgium initially turned it down, but later accepted. Had they turned it down, Greece was drafted as their replacement. Poland was given an invitation, but they turned it down, owing to resting their players during the summer of Yr53. Invitations were later given out to Switzerland, Scotland, and Croatia. Meanwhile, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Ecuador all accepted from South America, as did Mexico and the United States from North America. From Asia, South Korea, Australia, China and New Zealand were invited. North Korea was not invited as they had a strict policy on friendlies, and often played below their own talent level. South Africa and Cameroon, the only African invitees, accepted.
