2022 US Senate elections
The 2022 United States Senate elections will be held on November 8, 2022, with 34 of the 100 seats in the Senate being contested in regular elections, the winners of which will serve six-year terms in the United States Congress from January 3, 2023 to January 3, 2029. Senators are divided into three groups or Classes, whose terms are staggered so that a different class is elected every two years. In 2022, the Class 3 senators will be up for election, as they were last elected in 2016.
Background
In 2021, both the Douglass Commonwealth and Puerto Rico were admitted into the Union as the 51st and 52nd States respectively. The Douglass Commonwealth was placed into Class 1 and 2 to even out the Classes at 34 each, while Puerto Rico's Senators were drawn into Class 1 and 2 as well. Though this did not directly affect the 2022 elections, it did affect the partisan lean of the Senate, as two Democrats were elected in Douglass, and one Democrat and one Independent (caucusing with Democrats) were elected in Puerto Rico. This led to Republicans doubling their efforts to win over states with Democrat incumbents such as Ohio and New Hampshire, in order to bring back the balance of the Senate in their favour.
